What Is a Mortgage Originator?

The mortgage originator is the first company involved in the creation of a mortgage. A mortgage originator is an individual that works and markets mortgage loans directly to the public to originate mortgage loans to complete a home loan transaction. A mortgage originator can be a mortgage lender and can be either a mortgage broker or a mortgage banker. Mortgage originators are part of the primary mortgage market and must work with direct lenders, underwriters from the application date until closing to gather the necessary documentation and guide the file through the mortgage loan approval process.
